An amazing story of two brothers and their incredible contributions to the early automobile industry. There probably would be no Ford Motor Company today, without the genius of these pioneers. The landscape of the industry would be very different today had the brothers not succumbed to the flu pandemic in 1920.

This "book" is only one chapter of a previous book by the same author!!!

Not really worth buying... Just get the earlier book by Daniel Alef. "The road well travelled, a history of the American automobile pioneers " and you will find this as a chapter word for word! It certainly does not cover the story of these two extraordinary brothers in any depth at all!

The Fifties was a great time for Detroit and the look of their products reflected the carmakers optimism for the good times that were sweeping over the middle classes during the decade. Never mind racial tensions and the Cold War didn't everybody deserve to drive around in a flamboyant dream on wheels.

Books about autos of the period are steady sellers but I think this volume can't be beat. To get over sixteen hundred color photos and graphics in one book is pretty impressive. I like the editorial format, too, with each model getting a page per year. The mix of car company PR shots, period ads and graphics, dealer showroom and gas station photos plus the captions makes the pages sparkle. There is a very comprehensive index in the back, which makes Cars of the Fabulous 50s probably the best reference book available.

I see that this 416 page all-color book is available at some amazing low prices. Clearly a bargain.

Good if you prefer pictures

I bought this book as a gift for my dad, so I can't say whether or not I personally liked it. I thought it was a perfect gift for my dad because it has lots of pictures and not a lot of text (my dad isn't big on reading). The most text it has is captions under the pictures. He seemed to enjoy it - he spent an hour or two rummaging through it, and he still pulls it out every now and then (which is something he doesn't usually do - once the book gets put away, it stays put away).
So, if you prefer looking at pictures of cars from the fifties instead of reading about them, then this is a good book for you.

Well written books on welding are few and far between. Keeping a technical subject interesting and entertaining, while still being informative is an art in itself. Gerry Uttrachi is a master of that art in ADVANCED AUTOMOTIVE WELDING. The content of this book is possibly one of the best written and cogently assembled pieces of welding instruction that I've ever read.

I have literally dozens of books on welding that span a good 5 or 6 decades. Some of the better ones were written back in the 40's for training the wartime workers. It's amazing to me that it took over 60 years for a book to be published that is comprehensive and comprehendable, that explains in everyday language, the latest techniques in the welding arts and...

In talking with a friend who teaches welding she commented that the book was an excellent book for teaching but she could not use it in her welding class only because the work Automotive was in the title and the college would not accept it for a beginners class. I think that this book is one that any welder should have and a definite requirement for anyone working on automobiles. This book gives answers to problems a person might run into while constructing or repairing vehicles. A must buy for any welders reference library.

Anyone who thinks they'll be able to completely rebuild a Porsche 911 using this book (as the cover claims) is living in a world of make-believe. As the other reviewers have pointed out, the book glosses over any 911 made after 1977, and doesn't give any instruction on activities that the home mechanic might want to do, such as removing the airbox or changing the sparkplugs or filters. If you're serious about working on your 911, pony up the cash and buy the factory manuals. They're expensive, but worth the price you pay for them, especially if you factor in the money you're saving on labor costs. The Haynes manual is seriously out-of-date and useful only as an occasional reference.

Disappointing

I had always used Haynes Manuals to teach myself basice vehicle maintenance. This manual is an exception to their usual high quality.

Very misleading.
This would be a great book for anyone who is interested in actually rebuilding the alternater on a porsche 911 but is not the least bit interested in removing the said alternater. Same thing goes for the starter and everything else I needed the book for. I was sort of planning on taking the starter/alternater to a starter/alternater repair shop to have them rebuilt. The book spent three pages on exploded diagrams showing the inner workings of a starter and not even one photo of how to remove it. I've got news for most of you, unless you live in Stuttgart, there aren't many local starter shops that will work on a porsche 911....but once removed they're just simple bosche and motorolla parts and basically any shop will rebuild them for $30-$40. Everything i looked up was the same way...absolutely no photos of dissasembly...maybe that's on pupose...but I know for a fact I didn't purchase a book on rebuilding appliances this book has practically nothing to do with Porsche...

Motorcyclist is a mainstay in the motorcycle magazine world, a place where cycle novices like this reviewer can begin to get a monthly diet of news, mechanics, advertisements, reviews, and cycle talk.

The format is busy, with very narrow margins. Think the opposite of those luxury goods magazines that seem bent on calming your mind. MOTORCYCLIST wants to rev it up, or better yet, place it in a helmet and roughly equidistant between the two ends of a handlebar.

The magazine pays fair attention to racing and racing cycles, then moves on to street bikes and eventually to the cruisers that most interest this middle-aged fat boy of a reviewer. The current issue in front of me has an Asian touch, with a series of articles headlined provocatively as 'Korean bikes: do they suck?' and an article entitled 'Riding the Ho Chi Minh Trail.'

'Makes one recall thirty years ago, when we couldn't imagine that a company named Honda could actually squeak out a running...
This magazine is paper thin...
I subscribed for a year just because the price was only $10. I now know that the price of $10 was not really worth it for this magazine. First of all, when you hold it in your hands, you can feel how light and insubstantial it is. Then, you open it up and it's mostly ads for motorcycle gear and cars (!). I used to like Motorcyclist for its articles and the way I would get excited about new bikes and technologies they presented.

But then I started reading the far, far better UK bike mags like Bike and Superbike (which are more along my interests anyway since they mainly feature sportbikes). But you pick up one of those, yes they cost $10 each, but they are like 5 times the weight of Motorcyclist and jam packed with actually relevant articles that inform me and get me excited about riding every time I read. Unfortunately for us Americans, the UK bike scene is better in every way, so it's mostly a gallery of what we can't have.

Anyway, skip this magazine. It's...
Aimlessly Adrift...

When Mitch Boehm left, and Brian Catterson took top spot, this magazine went into a tailspin. Despite several retorts that it didn't turn into a Ducati infomercial, the evidence is overwhelming to the contrary. The writing went downhill, the perspective of what motorcycling means to a wider audience, and the circumspect approach to all owners flew out the window. I used to tell people Motorcyclist was the best. Not anymore. Do yourself a favor and get Cycle World. The writing is better, the experts are more credible, the articles are more intelligent, and they cover ALL the bikes. Rider is improving with each issue, having also surpassed Motorcyclist in quality some time ago.
